What do we do?
UQ Taiko holds weekly practice session at the University of Queensland St. Lucia campus, where we develop our drumming skills, learn songs and have fun together. We learn songs to perform at a range of public and private gigs, including our annual concert showcase, local school visits and university events.
Our song repertoire consists of a mixture of traditional Japanese taiko drumming pieces, those that are inspired by the North American taiko drumming style, and even original compositions by various team members. Each song is unique and holds a special meaning.
In addition to performances, we also provide 'Try Taiko!' workshops for local schools and the wider community, where anyone and everyone can experience what Japanese Taiko Drumming is all about! You do not need any prior experience to give Taiko a go, and we encourage you to come along and hit some drums!

Our History: From Laundry Baskets to REAL Taiko Drums
UQ Taiko began in March 2014 with ZERO real taiko drums, due to a lack of funding. The team started by playing on taped up laundry baskets and hand-fashioned cardboard drums, before launching an online Kickstarter fundraising project. With everyone's generous support, this project was a huge success, and we were able to purchase genuine taiko drums that we continue to use to this day. These drums have given us many wonderful opportunities to perform and hold workshops for the community.
We are here because of your incredible support and we are forever grateful for believing in us from the very beginning!
We are a not-for-profit group where all of the funds we raise go towards supporting our development as a performance team: purchase and maintenance of our instruments, uniforms, venue hire, transport and so much more. Thank you for continuing to support UQ Taiko!
